Suggest a Purchase

How we decide what to add to the library's collection

We welcome suggestions for purchases. These are the guidelines we use to decide whether or not to purchase a given title suggested by a member of the public:

Old books

We do not purchase books that were purchased more than 36 months ago, with the following exceptions:

  • It is newly relevant due to a TV or movie adaptation, or it's in the news, etc.
  • It is part of a school-related reading program such as Battle of the Books
  • It is a replacement for a copy that was lost or damaged in the past 36 months and that had been popular up until when it was lost or damaged.
  • It is a classic title
  • It has local or regional relevance

Series

We do not purchase books from series that ended more than 36 months ago, with the following exceptions:

  • It fills in a gap in a sequential series we already own and that series has continued to be checked out.
  • It is newly relevant due to a TV or movie adaptation, or it's in the news, etc.
  • It is part of a school-related reading program such as Battle of the Books
  • It has local or regional relevance

Self-published books

Books that are self-published or published by a vanity press must meet at least one of the following standards:

  • It is reviewed by an established book review publication
  • It has at least 1,000 ratings on Goodreads with an average of at least 3 stars
  • It has local or regional relevance

Like other types of books, the title must also have been published in the past 36 months.
